چکیده

It has previously been shown that in most joint diseases changes occur in the hyaluronic acid in the joint fluid. In diseased fluids the hyaluronic acid has a considerably lower degree of polymerization than in normal fluids or in uncomplicated traumatic effusions (Sundblad, 1953). The hyaluronic acid changes are especially marked in rheumatoid arthritis. We recently demonstrated (Sundblad, Egelius, and Jonsson, 1954) that the clinical response to the intra-articular injection of hydrocortisone is regularly accompanied by an often complete restoration to normal of the hyaluronic acid changes. It appeared to us that determination of the degree of polymerization of the hyaluronic acid might provide a convenient objective record of the effects of therapy in joint diseases. The present study includes comparative tests with hydrocortisone acetate, hydrocortisone tertiary-butylacetate and other forms of local or systemic therapy. A brief discussion of the nature of the hyaluronic acid changes and their relation to certain clinical and laboratory data is also given.

Inhibition of ascorbic-acid-induced depolymerization of hyaluronic acid by ceruloplasmin in synovial fluid.

It has been demonstrated in vitro that low concentrations of ascorbic acid rapidly depolymerize purified hyaluronic acid as judged from viscosity measurements (Skanse and Sundblad, 1943; Pigman, Rizvi, and Holley, 1961). Abrams and Sandson (1964) reported that the hyaluronic acid in rheumatoid synovial fluid is resistant to depolymerization by ascorbic acid in vitro. Serum proteins have been sh...

Intra-articular Injection for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis-Current Evidence and Future Prospects

Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) is well known to improved pain and function in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) [1,2]. As for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with knee osteoarthritis, current medication for injection therapy includes steroid, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). In this article, we collected current studies regarding to this issue and suggest f...

Glenohumeral Joint Injections

CONTEXT Intra-articular injections into the glenohumeral joint are commonly performed by musculoskeletal providers, including orthopaedic surgeons, family medicine physicians, rheumatologists, and physician assistants. Despite their frequent use, there is little guidance for injectable treatments to the glenohumeral joint for conditions such as osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis, and rheumatoi...

Electrophoresis studies of human synovial mucin.

A characteristic property of synovial fluids is the formation of a mucin clot when a weak acid is added. The physical character of the clot may be of some aid in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (Ropes, Bennett, Cobb, Jacox & Jesser, 1957; Ropes & Bauer, 1953). The clot has also been used as a preliminary step in the isolation of hyaluronic acid (Meyer, Smyth & Dawson, 1939) and its hexosa...

Late granulomatous reaction to hyaluronic acid associated with rheumatoid arthritis treated with leflunomide

Hyaluronic acid is the currently most used filler in dermatology due to its low risk of adverse events. The objective of this study is to report a case of granulomatous reaction after filling with two types of hyaluronic acid, in the perioral region and in the nasolabial folds. A female patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with leflunomide presented onset of symptoms 30 months after fillin...
